Is transplantation of high-risk donor lungs that have undergone EVLP, Feasible?

With the advancement of medical technology, organ transplantation has become a more widely used therapeutic measure. Along with that come a whole lot of problems. One such problem is finding a suitable organ to transplant. Lung transplantation is one such difficult transplantation process since 80% of the donor lungs are damaged. These lungs are considered not suitable for transplantation. Therefore, assessing the function of the lungs is a vital process.

This is where normothermic ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) comes into play. A study has been done to find the feasibility of transplanting such lungs and the results are promising. In this test, the high risk donor lungs are tested by perfusing them in an ex vivo circuit for 4 hours. High-risk donor lungs that were physiologically stable during 4 hours of ex vivo perfusion were used for transplantation. The study concluded as there is no difference between the outcome of conventionally selected lungs and EVLP lungs.
